Email to Cor
Here's an email I sent to Corinne Holubowich which pretty much summarizes what the status is with the Social Committee. Cor just started helping out with the committee...
Cor,
We need to re-plan how the Social committee can operate. Basically, we need to get a group of members together who can help coordinate and mobilize our social interactive extracurricular initiatives. The first tact we took last year was to get each team to provide a delegate to the committee. What this did was get a player out from most of the teams for a meeting to discuss the committee’s objectives. We designated a chair (Chuck Molgat) and vice chairs to help drive the committee and its objectives. What we have now is Chuck coordinating our No-Star parties and struggling to get help to do so. We’re in a situation where Chuck is the only one who is willing to take on some responsibility for the committee and the others may help out with doing some tasks if asked and if they have the time. People helping out is great, but we need people to help carry the responsibility of the committee and it’s objectives and help coordinate and distribute the work load in such a way that’s enjoyable and effective for everyone. I’m hoping we can review our objectives and start to directly recruit people who are enthusiastic and want to help out with the responsibility. Outside of recruiting people directly, Ray can help through the membership committee in letting everyone know what is needed for help and direct interested members to the Social Committee. I know all the committee’s objective may seem overwhelming, but the best process I see is to put all the cards on the table and then see what we can do about getting each of them picked up by different members.
This is part of an email I sent out earlier regarding the Social Committee and its objectives…
“Nothing has been done on my end to proceed with the Community Committee's mandate. I'm hoping you can get things rolling, ideally by getting as many enthusiastic members as possible to take some degree of responsibility in getting and keeping all the projects we discussed and any new ones that come up moving. I can forward out a group email to all the membership to see if we can get some new blood who can inject some more excitement in getting things going. I'm not attached to any specific organization structure for the committee as long as we can work something out that gets tasks done, encourages involvement from any interested member and encourages any new practical ideas we can develop. Here are the basics of the things I see we can be working on...
1) We've scheduled 2 No- Star games for Dec. 2nd, Mar 3rd & 10th. Whatever we can come up with for post-game entertainment will be great.
2) Get a donation bin from Daily Bread dropped off at McCormick. Both Daily Bread & McCormick are receptive, we probably have to remind them because it's been a year since we talked to both of them about having a regular collection bin at McCormick.
3) See if anyone is interested in taking on any of the ideas that we have come up with or work on their own ideas. We should further encourage teams to pick a Saturday night at some time and host any kind of event that will bring us together. Some of the other ideas we talked about are movie fest or screenings, lectures - hotstove - town hall discussions, art shows, rally bus excursions to other league games in Toronto and Ontario, make more of a spectacle of our games through live music, programs, promotions and broadcasts, video game tourneys and parades
4) We need to have another meeting with the Rhino to re-establish our relationship and see what we can do to improve it.
5) Actually, one of the most important things we need to do is draw up the committees mandate/bylaws and outline how members can get involved.
The hockey clinics have been going alright. We're probably going to lose money on them, but I think it's a good start to the idea and I hope attendance will improve over time as the membership is more familiar with it and we can customize the clinics more to attract better participation. The GTHLAkids is initiated. Pete Gaffney is heading that up and we'll see how it goes. There are cross-overs to any sponsorship we come up with too. Getting the financial Committee moving, who deal with sponsorship, is also a high priority. I'll let you know when that's coming together too.
Obviously things are in a bit of disarray and we need to focus as best we can and lay the foundation so things will continue to grow. Thanks for all your help.”
Dave Bidini is interested in getting promotions rolling along with Diana Olsen’s help.
Also, Luis Freitas is interested in getting the Rally Bus started to go watch other grass roots hockey. He’s working on a Marlies excursion.
Also, we might want to discuss promoting different bars on regular Saturdays instead of the Rhino.
Thanks for your help,
Tom”
One difficulty is communicating with me. I’ve got more email coming in than I’m able to deal with. My email communication is sporadic because of this. I’m hoping that the committee can eventually operate independent of me.
I have many plans to keep things running more effectively and please keep giving me feedback on that front see I can keep an appropriate priority list.
All the Best,
Tom
